Starting at the carpark at Altnafeadh, we follow the route past the SMC hut at Lagangarbh before taking the path into Corrie na Tulaich. We continue on the steep route to the head of the coire, through boulder fields and rough scree before finally reaching the broad ridge. From here we follow the rough path up the broad ridge and to the first summit of Stob Dearg, a superb viewpoint and a great spot to linger on a summers day.

We trace the route back to the headwall before continuing the long ascent along the fabulous ridge towards the top of Stob na Doire and then continue to the second munro of Stob na Brioge.

The return journey takes us back along the same route to the bealach just after the top of Stob na Doire, where a good path with some minor scrambling descends to the glen below and back to the start point.

Tour of Cawdor Castle, Clava Cairns & Fort George. - Highland Council, United Kingdom

Duration: 5 hours
Location: Highland Council, United Kingdom

From USD
$244.32

Tours of Fort George and Clava Cairns are both highly requested of us and it’s not hard to see why! These two locations are amazing parts of Inverness’ history and provide a great opportunity to investigate both the military and cultural aspects of Highland culture.

Cawdor Castle was built in the 14th century, by the Thanes of Cawdor, with the ancient medieval tower built around the legendary holly tree – wherever you look, Cawdor Castle is steeped in intrigue and history.

Around 4000 years old, the series of stone cairns are all that remains of a Bronze Age cemetery, crematorium, sundial and calendar and are just above the River Nairn. An important remnant of the past of the local Scots, the Clava Cairns has become a major tourist destination in recent years thanks to the popularity of the Diana Gabaldon book series and TV show ‘Outlander’ which drew inspiration from the cairns for the ‘Craigh na Dun’ locale which sent the hero Claire Randall back in time to Jacobite Scotland!
