You will travel through the beautiful moor foot hills on your journey to the farm.
As you drive down the avenue you are surrounded by hills and sheep grazing. A little piece of heaven hidden in the valley!
Pedigree Cheviot sheep graze the Carcant hills, running up to 1000 head including lambs throughout the summer months. The terrain on the higher ground dictates the need for such great dogs. You will see young dogs learning their trade, watch some amazing dogs demonstrating their working skills with sheep. Julie will share her knowledge and tell stories of her life as a shepherd with these wonderful companions. Afterwards there’s time to have refreshments, ask questions and interact with these great dogs. They all love to socialise.

Itinerary

On arrival I will give an introduction that covers our work on the farm and explains what is involved in the demonstration, an explanation and demonstration of how we communicate with our dogs using their language.
You will then move to the enclosed viewing area where I will work and describe how I communicate with my young dogs using just body language and gestures, demonstrating how to control the hunting instincts and utilize their energy in to a working method that shows empathy for the sheep.
I will work with different dogs to show each step of training, explain pressure & release techniques and how important hierarchy is in the working dog.
I will show how I teach my dogs to think for themselves along with teaching associated commands. I will also explain how working with my method “The Natural Way” creates a willing partnership.
After covering basic and intermediate stages I will bring out my fully trained dogs, demonstrating the value of these tremendous dogs as I replicate working situations what these dogs do every day demonstrating the true teamwork and partnership I have with my dogs.

At the end there will be time for refreshments and to socialize with the dogs!

If you're in Scotland, sampling our famous homebaking is an absolute must - the Scots are reknowned for their sweet tooth! And Carfraemill's traditional Scottish Afternoon Tea is the perfect way to sample the nation's favourite recipes. Carfraemill has been serving afternoon teas since at least the 1930s, and probably as far back as the 1800s too. We still serve it in the traditional way, with fine bone china and all of the savoury and sweet elements you'd expect including finger sandwiches, homemade scones with homemade jam, and a range of amazing home bakes and meringues.

Itinerary

When in Scotland, it's an absolute must to experience a traditional afternoon tea. As the name suggests, this is a post-lunch or pre-dinner ‘meal’ and it revolves around dainty sandwiches and traditional Scottish cakes and sweet treats. We serve all of our afternoon teas in the traditional way - on pretty, vintage plates with teacups and saucers.

You'll be treated to 4 elements of afternoon tea:

1. SCOTTISH TEA (AND PROSECCO IF YOU CHOOSE THIS!)
When you arrive, you'll be offered a pot of Scottish Tea by Brodies of Edinburgh, but coffee or herbal teas are available if you prefer.

2. SAVOURY TEA
Traditional finger sandwiches and mini homemade sausage rolls.

3. SCOTTISH SCONES
Homemade scones, which Carfraemill is famous for, served with delicious local jam and cream. Be sure to ask for a top up of tea or coffee if you need one!

4. CREAM CAKES & SCOTTISH TRAYBAKES
The top tier of the cake stand, and usually the last to be eaten, includes a selection of Scottish cakes and homemade traybakes. Most of our recipes have been passed down through generations from across the Highlands and the Lowlands of Scotland.

Discover Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott; one of Scotland’s most fascinating places. Our stylish restaurant serves a range of freshly prepared refreshments and meals made with locally-sourced ingredients including morning coffee, lunches and afternoon tea. Fresh seasonal menus are available throughout the day.

Sir Walter Scott’s imagination and creativity extended beyond the walls of his house into the outdoors and the creation of beautiful formal gardens. Each garden at Abbotsford is distinct in character; taken together, they form three outdoor ‘rooms’ designed to offer picturesque settings for the main house. The gardens we see today are still fundamentally Scott’s work, though with certain alterations carried out by his descendants to adapt the space for the changing needs of the family.

You can reach Abbotsford easily from Edinburgh Waverley Train Station by taking the Borders Railway to Tweedbank, which takes less than 1 hour. From here you can take a signposted walk to Abbotsford which will take around 20 minutes.
