This 2-hour walking tour provides you with fantastic insights into the most historic and world famous sites in York. Starting with Romans you will explore the 'Snickelways' of York - a unique collection of small streets and footpaths - and architectural wonders that have captivated the world's attention for centuries. The tour culminates in the magical York Minster - a must see for any walking tour, and you have an option to choose the tour with or without the entrance fee.

Your tour starts with a mid-morning or afternoon pickup in central York where you meet your expert guide. Ever since its establishment in 71 AD, York has been the site of savage warfare, intense political intrigue and industrial breakthrough. It was here that Constantine, who would shake Europe to its core by converting Rome to Christianity, became Roman Emperor. It was here that Richard III, later immortalized by Shakespeare, plotted his campaigns during the Wars of the Roses. York is the birthplace, too, of Guy Fawkes, the greatest traitor in England’s history!

The York Minster is a truly stunning attraction, and is one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. The first church on this site dates back to 627AD (note, not 1627AD, but 627AD!) and the result of its various incarnations is nothing but an architectural marvel. The tour will also cover the English Reformation and its effect on the Minster, perhaps one of the most profound events in English history, the effects of which are still being felt today.

This tour will cover both history and architecture – but in a way that can really hold your interest! Many of the tour guides are local history students; all are well-versed in York’s unique history and keen to share it with visitors. Over the course of the walking tour, they’ll work tirelessly to show you a truly memorable experience.

Apart from York Minster, this 2-hour walking tour will cover Emperor Constantine, Richard III, The Multangular Tower, Guy Fawkes, The King’s Manor, Berden Hall, St Mary’s Abbey, York City Walls, Clifford’s Tower, Monk Bar, Fairfax House, York Castle Prison, Stonegate, St Williams College and War of the Roses.

Discover two of Yorkshire’s finest attractions on grand tour from York. On this small-group tour from York you’ll spend an unforgettable day visiting Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Park – the UNESCO World Heritage listed Cistercian Monastery and Georgian Water Gardens – and the amazing Castle Howard estate (made famous as the location of ‘Brideshead Revisited’). You'll also spend lunchtime in the rural village of Kilburn, with the option of a leisurely lunch or a stunning walk around Yorkshire's White Horse.

On this small-group tour from York you will be taken to two of Yorkshire’s most celebrated destinations in the company of a knowledgeable local driver-guide. You’ll travel with an experienced guide, exploring the countryside of North Yorkshire on the way to Fountains Abbey and Castle Howard.

The day begins with a journey past the city of Ripon to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park. The site is home to a breathtaking combination of attractions, including the amazingly well-preserved ruins of Fountains Abbey, one of the UK’s largest Cistercian monasteries. During your time at Fountains Abbey you can explore the monastery ruins, the world-renowned Georgian Water Gardens and the wonderful Studley Royal Estate. You can stroll along a riverside path, visit the watermill and enjoy a drink in the beautifully appointed Lakeside Café. Finally, the tour continues from Fountains Abbey through the medieval deer park, home to three breeds of deer and beautiful views down to Ripon Cathedral in the centre of Ripon.

The next stop is the rural village of Kilburn, where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch, enjoy a tour of the Robert Thompson Mouseman Visitor Centre – or take an exhilarating walk around Yorkshire's famous White Horse, a fantastic route which (on a clear day) offers breathtaking views across the Yorkshire countryside.

In the afternoon the tour continues with a drive through the countryside to the world-famous Castle Howard Estate. During your visit to Castle Howard you’ll be able access the extensive estate, grounds and gardens. You can discover the magnificent Temple of the Four Winds – Castle Howard’s summer house – which enjoys a fantastic position at the corner of the estate and offers unspoilt views of the surrounding countryside. You will also be able to explore the amazing house itself. Castle Howard has been the home of the Howard family since it was first built in 1706; the ‘castle’ has been one of England’s grandest and best-loved stately homes ever since, welcoming Royalty, dignitaries, heads of state, important politicians and celebrated special guests ever since. The filming of ‘Brideshead Revisited’ – both the TV adaptation and the Hollywood movie – took place on the estate and in many rooms of the house. Your tour of the house will be enhanced by the guides stationed in almost every room of the house.

Leaving Castle Howard, you’ll return to York to conclude the tour.
